Importing Perfume Oils from Dubai to the US, UK and Australia: Duties and Documents

Documents, duty thresholds and customs checks for importing perfume oils from Dubai to the US, UK and Australia, with official links.

To import perfume oils from Dubai to the US, UK or Australia, you need a commercial invoice that names each oil, the SDS for every oil, and a plan for the duty and import tax that is due when the goods land. The rules that matter most right now: the US has suspended its USD 800 de minimis exemption, so every shipment needs a customs entry; the UK charges Customs Duty on goods worth more than GBP 135; and Australia needs a full import declaration for consignments over AUD 1,000.

This guide covers the documents to ask for, what each country checks, and where to find your duty rate. Rates change, so we link to each official source instead of quoting them.

What to check before you place the order

  1. Your duty rate. Duty depends on how the oil is classified in your country's tariff and on its declared value. Look up the code in the tariff linked above, or ask a licensed customs broker.
  2. The total order value. In Australia, goods known to be part of the same order count as one consignment, even if they arrive in separate boxes on separate days. Do not split an order to stay under a threshold.
  3. Who pays on arrival. Agree with your supplier and courier whether duty and tax are collected on delivery, so your parcel is not held.
  4. How the oil will travel. Read section 14 of the SDS for each oil and confirm your courier or forwarder accepts it on the route you plan.
  5. Your first order size. Our guide to buying perfume oil by the kilo shows how pack prices step down as size goes up.

FAQ

Do I pay import duty on perfume oils from Dubai?

It depends on your country, the order value and the tariff code. In the UK, Customs Duty applies to non excise goods worth more than GBP 135. In Australia, duties and taxes apply to consignments over AUD 1,000. In the US, every shipment needs an entry, and the rate comes from the US tariff schedule.

Can I still use the USD 800 de minimis rule in the US?

No. CBP says the suspension applies to goods valued at USD 800 or less arriving by all modes, including the international postal network.

What documents should come with a fragrance oil shipment?

A commercial invoice naming each oil, its value and the country of origin, plus the SDS for each oil. We also send the IFRA certificate and COA on request.

Are fragrance oils dangerous goods for shipping?

It depends on the oil. Section 14 of the SDS shows its transport classification, so ask for the SDS of each oil before you book freight.

Do I need a customs broker?

Not always. The Australian Border Force encourages first time and infrequent importers to use a licensed customs broker. To get a quote, email ankit@aromalabs.store with the oils, sizes and your country.
