Leather and tobacco give a perfume depth, warmth and a slightly smoky edge. Some of the best known men's and unisex scents of the last twenty years are built around them, from the spice of Spicebomb to the honeyed tobacco of Le Male Elixir and the smooth leather of Montblanc Explorer. Our oud and amber list and winter list covered resins and cosy notes. This one is about leather, suede and tobacco. Here are eight oils from our range. Each one sits under the perfume it smells like, followed by our matching oil, its notes and when it works best.
1. Viktor&Rolf Spicebomb

Our match: Pink Pepper Cinnamon Perfume Oil
The product page lists pink pepper, elemi, bergamot and grapefruit on top, then cinnamon, paprika and saffron in the heart. Tobacco, leather and vetiver make up the base. It is hot spice over a dry tobacco and leather trail.
Best for: formal evenings in autumn and winter. Listed in our men's range, in Signature and Essential grades.
2. Penhaligon's Halfeti Leather

Our match: Plum Nutmeg Perfume Oil
Plum, cardamom, lavender, bergamot and green notes open the scent. Nutmeg, cinnamon, rose, cumin, violet and jasmine sit in the heart, with leather, oud, incense, cedar and patchouli in the base. Dark fruit and spice settle into smoky leather and woods.

3. Montblanc Explorer

A note on the notes
The notes above come from each product page, where they describe the reference perfume's scent profile. They are not an ingredient list. Always sample the grade you plan to use and test it in your own base first.
Using these oils in your products
- Our oils are 100% concentrate, with no DPG and no fixatives, and they work in alcohol based perfumes.
- Leather and tobacco notes can feel heavy at high doses, so start low and build up. Our guide on how much fragrance oil to use in perfume explains the usual ranges.
- For candles, soap or body products, check the IFRA limits for that use. Our IFRA categories guide shows how to read them.
